Payments Modernization Remains a Major Bank Technology Priority

Payments continue to occupy one of the most strategically important positions in bank technology.
In York Public Relations’ 2026 State of Fintech survey, payment technology ranked second overall among banks’ fintech investment priorities.
The finding reflects an environment in which payment infrastructure continues to evolve while consumers and businesses increasingly expect transactions to happen quickly and seamlessly.

What Banks Are Modernizing

The survey identifies several areas driving payment investment, including real-time payment capabilities, modernized payment rails, digital wallet integrations, faster ACH and cross-border processing, and fraud mitigation within payment flows.
Together, those priorities illustrate why payments modernization is bigger than any single rail or product. Banks are adapting infrastructure to an increasingly real-time financial environment.

Payments Are Also About Customer Ownership

Payment activity represents more than movement of money. It is a frequent point of interaction between a financial institution and its customers.
As non-bank providers continue developing embedded finance and digital wallet capabilities, banks have reason to protect both customer engagement and transaction ownership.
That makes payment modernization relevant not only to operations but also to revenue protection and fee generation.
For payments fintechs, the opportunity is substantial—but the message needs to extend beyond speed. Banks need to understand how a solution fits their infrastructure, manages risk, integrates with existing systems and ultimately strengthens the institution’s position in the payment relationship.
